Local ladies reach out

In a society where social media is a regular way to connect, two Black Diamond women are taking an old-fashioned approach to supporting one another.

In a society where social media is a regular way to connect, two Black Diamond women are taking an old-fashioned approach to supporting one another.

Jeanne Bonertz and Kendra Klassen are implementing a group for local women that meets weekly to share ideas, create friendships and support one another in a range of topics from weight loss and meal planning to getting organized and balancing home and work.

“I figured if I could get a bunch of women together we could all offer great ideas on how to work on different aspects of our lives,” said Bonertz. “Then we kind of hold each other accountable and support each other.”

While there are an abundance of forums for moms and women via social media, particularly Facebook, Bonertz said she craves a more personal connection with other women in her community.

“I think we’re losing that face to face,” she said. “That’s why I find it hard to be accountable because I don’t have that.”

While Bonertz has made some close friends since moving to Black Diamond 12 years ago, she felt that local support could be further expanded.

She plans to start meetings in mid to late February with a different topic each week, while keeping the topics consistent each month.

While Bonertz feels confident sharing tips and ideas on eating healthy and getting organized with others, there are other areas she could use some help with as a mom, wife and new business owner.

Bonertz and Klassen will also bring in professionals to speak about such topics as health care, nutrition and exercise.

“Support is a big thing when you are on the same journey as everyone else,” Bonertz said. “Everyone is wanting to be the best mother, wife and employee they can be.”

Having grown up constantly moving from city to city, Bonertz said this is the first opportunity she’s had to really connect with a community.

“I’m so excited about it,” she said. “I never made long term friends. In Black Diamond I’ve had the same six friends for 10 years now. I don’t want to leave because I have that support.”

Bonertz said there are likely many residents in the area who are new or haven’t made close friends who would benefit from a group like this.

“The way Turner Valley and Black Diamond are growing there is a lot of new people here that don’t have that,” she said. “Life is harder when it’s just you and your family and you’re not getting out there.”

Klassen is also looking forward to connecting with other people in the community.

“Sometimes you just get in a rut and you need new ideas and support,” she said. “That’s what’s going to be great about a group in the Diamond Valley area because it’s small, it’s all with local people.”

As a full-time working mom with four children, and two step-children she cares for on alternating weekends, Klassen said she could use some pointers in certain areas of being a mom and wife.

“I have a crazy busy house,” she said. “I cook the same stuff every week because it’s easy, it’s convenient. I know it lacks nutrition. I want meal prep ideas.”

Klassen said she knows she’s not alone when it comes to needing a few tips and suggestions.

“There are so many busy moms out there,” she said.

“I’m excited to have some ideas and to share my own as well. Women thrive so much better if we have the support of other people. It’s just women supporting women and sharing ideas.”

A small fee will be charged for membership and babysitting services will be available to those who require it.
