Okotoks Branch #291 currently sponsors four cadet units within the Okotoks area: 187 Foothills Air Cadets, 2383 Foothills Calgary Highlanders Army Cadets, 205 Navy League Cadets and the Okotoks Sea Cadet Corps. These units have a wide range of activities for the youth of our community and we are proud that we can provide support to them in their endeavors. They are always looking for more members and instructors/officers. Please see their respective websites for more information. Links will also be available on our Okotoks Legion website along with their forecasts of events/activities.

Here are the dates of the upcoming events within Branch #291’s calendar:

March 24: There will be a Legion Dinner held at the Elks Hall, please check our Facebook page and Website (okotokslegion.ca) for details nearer the time.

April 9: At 4 p.m. we will hold a short parade for “Vimy Day,” also known as “Birth of a Nation Day.” This year is the 100th Anniversary of Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917, and the Service at the Cenotaph is to commemorate the battle and the Canadians victory in capturing the seven-kilometre long ridge which had withstood previous Allied assaults at a cost of more that 100,000 casualties.

May 8: At 6 p.m. we will hold a short parade for VE Day. This service at the Cenotaph on Veterans Way marks the end of the Second World War in Europe 1945.

June 6: At 6 p.m. we will hold a D-Day parade. The service at the Cenotaph marks the Allied Invasion of Occupied Europe in the second world war in 1944.

June 17: The Okotoks Town Parade.

Any food or cash donations you may have for veterans and their families can be dropped at the Okotoks Food Bank for the veteran’s section.

We know there are approximately 80 to 100 veterans currently living on the streets of Calgary or ‘couch surfing’ (no home). Any help you can give is most gratefully received either to the Okotoks Food Bank or the Veterans Food Bank in Calgary. Opening times are on their websites.

If you know a veteran who is struggling please contact the Legion via the website and we will make sure the information gets to our Service Officer so that we can assist.
