The bigger they are — well sometimes they are just bigger.

The Holy Trinity Academy Knights lost their first senior high school girls basketball game of the season when they were downed 73-41 by the Strathcona Lords from Edmonton in a tournament final in Cochrane Saturday.

“We needed to have this sooner than later,” Knights coach Scott Royce said of the loss. “I was curious about how our girls would handle their first loss.”

He said the coaches were pleased with how the Knights reacted.

“They kept their chins up and they remained united and collegial from beginning to end,” Royce said.

It was also good experience. This season is the Knights first foray into 4A basketball and at 1,600 students, ‘Scona is one of the biggest kids on the block.

The Knights fell behind 19-2, but were able to battle back to close the gap to 28-25 at the half.

That would be as close as they would get as the Knights, who were missing three players, ran out of gas in dropping the decision. Annelise Hielema was named the Knights player of the game.

HTA opened the tournament by beating Cochrane’s St. Timothy Thunder 83-38 on Friday. Grade 12 stalwart Elena Brown-Hozjan was the Knights player of the game.

The Knights advanced to the finals by beating the St. Mary’s Saints 74-45. Grade 10 phenom Jordan Bonertz was selected the Knights player of the game.

Earlier in the week, HTA kept their stranglehold in the Foothills Athletic Council standings by beating the NDC Timberwolves 71-16 Jan. 11 in Okotoks.

The Knights are 5-0. They travel to take on the Strathcona-Tweedsmuir Spartans Jan. 18 at STS at 5:30 p.m.
