Inspiring the next generation

The Olympics are always inspirational and awe-inspiring, and the 2016 games in Rio didn’t disappoint..

Everywhere I went, people were talking about the Olympics – the medals Canada was winning, our country’s domination in swimming (thank you Penny Oleksiak).

At the gym, in restaurants and lounges, anywhere with a television, groups of people were found watching the games, or at least taking glimpses of events as they went about their day.

Every time the Olympics end, my kids are all about sports. It makes them anxious to get started with their fall activities, to get moving and training and doing those things they love the most.

This winter we’ll have a couple of softball players (training indoors for next spring), one taking to the basketball court, and the youngest will begin her very first extracurricular activity: gymnastics.

My two-year-old Little Miss will take to the balance beam this September in the “Busy Bees” program. Of course, this means mom is taking part in her very first gymnastics class, too.

I’ve never been much for flexibility and agility, so it’s a good thing all I need to do is hold her hand. Stability I can handle.

I’m curious to see what she does with the class, whether she takes to it, if she’ll be her shy little self or learn to branch out a little more once she starts having fun. Maybe she won’t like it - she’s not really one for being told what to do.

Or perhaps she’ll fall in love and this will become a lifelong ambition and passion.

Maybe one day I’ll be cheering for her at the Olympics.
