Students were evacuated from Foothills Composite High School Tuesday afternoon after workers accidentally cut into a gas line.

According to Drew Chipman, assistant superintendent of corporate services, the leak was accidentally caused shortly after 2 p.m. on March 7 when a worker on the school’s roof accidentally cut a gas line.

The leak forced the evacuation of the school and students were moved into the Foothills Centennial Centre

Officials with ATCO and the Okotoks Fire Department attended to repair the leak. Students and staff were cleared to return before 3 p.m., said Chipman.

However, classes were cancelled for the afternoon and school will resume Wednesday morning.

“We’re sending kids back in to get their keys and their books and everything they need and they’re done for the day,” said Chipman.

He said parents will receive notification about the incident.
