From the mail into the recycling

Dear Editor,

Not long ago we got a friendly reminder from the lady that delivers our mail; the reminder asked that we pick up our mail more frequently as the box was too full to get more mail into.

My wife and I really have no excuse for not picking up the mail more frequently so we have changed that.

The reality is that when we take the mail from the mailbox, we take it home and sort it out in the garage; we put 85 per cent of it straight into the recycling.

That is because its junk mail, flyers from businesses that are not even located in the Okotoks area, paper flyers from every grocery store in town, every fast food outlet etc. etc.

With all the talk about the cost of recycling it seems this should be an issue to be addressed. The lady that delivers the mail is required to deliver what they give her, so we get it.

I know that businesses have to advertise but all these same flyers are available on line, at the front door when you enter the store and you hear about sales on the radio?

As taxpayers we are paying the postal service to be big enough to handle this mail and we pay for recycling as well on our property taxes?

In this information age we live in we should be able to reduce this level of waste, while at the same time reduce our own tax burden.

Municipal recycling programs are here to stay and they are needed, so now we have to work towards reducing the volume, it’s just like taking your own bags to the grocery store.
