Okotoks’ main fire hall will open its doors to cap off Fire Prevention Week.

The Okotoks Fire Department is hosting an open house at the main fire hall on Milligan Drive on Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Okotoks Fire Chief Ken Thevenot said it’s a good chance for people to ask questions and learn about how to protect themselves and their homes from fires.

“We can do a lot of prevention, give free home inspections, answer any questions, get some material out to folks here, we want to have zero fires in our community,” he said.

Firefighters are also giving people a chance to see just how heavy and thick smoke can be during a fire.

A smoke tent will be set up in front of the fire hall and filled with fake smoke to give people a chance to experience what it’s like to step into a smoke filled room.

“It gives an individual walking through there the feeling of what it would be like to be in a fire with no visibility,” said Thevenot.

The event will also include tours of the fire hall and there will be two demonstrations of a vehicle extrication using the jaws of life, one at 11:30 a.m. and another at 12:45 p.m.

There will be free hot dogs and refreshments.
