One half of the Foothills Falcons ferocious linebacking foursome is headed to the Senior Bowl.

Falcons ballhawks Keaton Goossen and Tyler Going nabbed two of the 41 rosters spots available on Team South to earn their spot in Football Alberta’s season-ending showcase of the top senior athletes May 22 at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do throughout high school,” Going said. “It’s pretty important for me to make the team. It’s the last time I get to play high school football and I’m pretty excited to get on the field again.”

Both players were captains on the Falcons back-to-back Tier II provincial championship teams.

“It means a lot. The Falcons program developed me to be that good – all the credit to them,” Goossen said. “It makes me proud for Falcons football and makes me proud that I can progress as an athlete.”

Goossen, who never played football prior to the high school level, was named the team’s Player of the Year at the high school’s awards banquet while Going was named a co-winner of top defensive player.

The roster for Team South was selected based on an evaluation camp held April 21-23 at McMahon.

“It was a really physical camp it really did wear on you,” Goossen said. “It’s all worth it in the end once you see you’re on the roster, all that soreness, waking up early was worth it.

“One of the better parts of me as an athlete is I’m a lot more physical. I really tried to show that off, that I will give a hit even though I’m not a big guy.”

Going, a tackling machine for the Comp for all three of his seasons, relied on speed and athleticism to catch the eye of the Team South evaluators.

“With most linebackers they don’t quite have the hands I do or the speed,” Going said. “I tried to use that to my advantage and standout in that way because I don’t stand out in size.”

Also suiting for Team South is DeWinton’s Blake Klotz, a slotback for Henry Wise Wood, who came up through the Foothills Eagles and Big Rock Bengals ranks.

In the 27-year history of the event Team South owns a 14-13 edge over the North.

Team South brings a two-game winning streak into the 2017 Bowl as former Falcon Trey Kellogg played a starring role with two touchdowns in the South’s lopsided 39-6 victory last May.

Foothills owns the record for most players at the Tier II level to have played in the Senior Bowl, at 56, four better than Medicine Hat.

“School is one thing, but just to play for the South team is a huge honour,” Goossen said.

“Knowing that we’ve dominated the series and south football, the Calgary area, is what I believe is the best area for football. I definitely take great pride in being on and representing the South.”
