The enthusiastic small-town crowd in Magrath failed to help the Foothills Falcons reach their zenith.

The 12th-ranked Foothills Falcons boys squad dropped a 65-54 decision March 16 to the no. 5 Magrath Zenith in the opening round of the Alberta Schools Athletics Association’s 4A Senior boys basketball championships in Magrath

The Falcons were never quite able to find their groove to quiet the loud Zenith fan contingent. Foothills was down 36-25 at the half.

The Falcons now find themselves on the consolation side of things. They will hope the luck of the Irish isn’t with the Archbishop O’Leary Spartans from Edmonton today when the two teams square off at 11 a.m. in Magrath.

The Falcons girls squad also were dropped to the consolation side after losing 69-62 to Edmonton’s Strathcona Lords March 16 in Magrath.

The hard-working gritty Foothills was in it the entire game. The Falcons took a 52-44 lead into the final quarter after Georgia Edey hit a pair of buckets in the final minute of the third quarter.

The 12th ranked Foothills girls will play the no. 13 Cardston Cougars today at 11 p.m. at Winston Churchill High School in Lethbridge.
