Dear Editor,
I have just received information that there is going to be clear cutting of the trees in the Highwood south of the Highwood River starting this fall. If in fact this is correct, I would be extremely opposed to this plan.
This is a prime hiking and skiing area for people who live in the south end of Calgary, Okotoks, High River, Black Diamond and Turner Valley. This definitely does not make any sense to me as there are so many other areas on the Eastern slopes where logging could be conducted. This is a recreation area that is used by thousands of people and to log it over would destroy a really beautiful area.
As an alternative area to Banff National Park, Canmore area and the Kananaskis this area lets people enjoy a more ‘back country’ experience. I have hiked and skied in this area for many years and I really hope that this plan will be reconsidered and not proceed any further.
