A man forced his way into an Okotoks bar and made off with a significant, but undisclosed amount of cash in an early morning robbery.

At approximately 2 a.m. on Jan. 20, an employee at the Grand Central Bar and Grill on Elizabeth Street was taking out the garbage when he was confronted by a man in the alley behind the bar.

The suspect forced his way inside through the back door and demanded money from the safe. He told staff to put the money in a backpack he had with him.

There were no customers in the bar at the time, only staff.

“This happened 2 a.m., so the bar was being closed,” said Okotoks RCMP Sgt. Sukh Randhawa.

RCMP are not revealing how much money was stolen, but Randhawa said it was a significant amount.

He also said it’s believed the suspect had a weapon on him at the time of the robbery, though he did not show it to anyone in the bar.

Randhawa said the staff did the right thing by complying with the suspect’s demands for cash.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male between five-foot-nine inches and five-feet-11-inches tall, approximately 180 pounds with dark eyes and long brownish-grey hair.

He was wearing grey baggy sweatpants, a dark hoodie, gloves and a grey mask, with black shading on it. He was also carrying a black backpack with several zippers on it.

Randhawa is asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time and seen the suspect or anything suspicious to contact RCMP.

“We’re asking the public for information and assistance in this,” he said.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact Okotoks RCMP at 403-995-6400. Anonymous tips can be made to CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
