A happy-go-lucky foursome planned to go to the Canada 55+ Plus Games to share a few laughs and giggles.

It wound up smiling all the way to the final rock on Aug. 19 in Brampton, Ont.

The Team Alberta rink, which calls the Black Diamond area home, took home the silver medal in the 65+ curling category after dropping a 7-6 decision to Team B.C.

“After eight ends we were tied 6-6, but they had the hammer in the extra end,” said Team Alberta skip Lloyd Nelson. “It was an open shot but I had two rocks in the house so he had to stick. If he would have rolled at all, we would have won.”

The Alberta rink consisted of lead Barb Larson, Black Diamond; second Jim Nicolson, Turner Valley; third Rose Dayment, Longview and Nelson, Black Diamond.

No complaints from the Wild Rose province squad for its finish.

“Everybody was sitting on pins and needles, but they (B.C.)were able to pull it off,” Nelson said with a chuckle. “We gave it our best shot and did better than our initial expectations. We made a lot of friends and had some fun. That’s what it was all about.

“We got to go to a national event and how many times do you get to do that? B.C. was the best team all week, they went undefeated and I don’t think they expected us to give them as tough as a match as we did.”

Team Alberta was in second-place after the round robin with a 3-2 record, earning a spot in the final. It defeated Saskatchewan, Yukon and Nova Scotia and dropped its contests versus Saskatchewan and B.C.

The Black Diamond squad will put their brooms and sliders away for a while. They will be back in the hack in the fall on Monday nights at the Oilfields Curling Club for league play.
