A 45-year-old Sherwood Park man was killed and his son is in potentially life-threatening condition after a collision between a motorcycle and SUV on Highway 22 on Sunday.

At approximately 5 p.m. on July 31, EMS responded to a collision where it’s believed the father and son travelling northbound collided into an SUV as it was making a U-turn across the highway, according to a press release from the Turner Valley RCMP.

A press release by Alberta Health Services states the father and son were thrown from the motorcycle under a travel trailer that was being pulled by the SUV just north of Highway 540.

Bystanders pulled the two to safety prior to the arrival of emergency services, it states.

The 12-year-old boy on the motorcycle was transported to Alberta Children’s Hospital via STARS Air Ambulance and is now in stable condition.

The four occupants in the SUV, two adults and two children from Washington, were transported to the Oilfields General Hospital in Black Diamond with minor injuries.

According to the Turner Valley RCMP, speed and driver error are believed to be factors and a 39-year-old man from Washington was charged with an unsafe U-turn under the Highway and Rules of the Road Regulations.

Turner Valley RCMP Sgt. Paulina Larrey-King reminds motorists to be careful when on the road.

“Typically long weekends do tend to be very busy and people have their holiday mind on,” she said. “It’s very important that they follow the rules of the road and be patient with other drivers.”

The accident remains under investigation.
