Changes needed for road plan

There is nothing like sober second thought and open communications. The Town of Okotoks wisely put a halt to the tender process to widen sidewalks along Veterans Way for a path system for bikes and skateboards as well as to realign Elma Street.

The Town of Okotoks wisely put a halt to the tender process to widen sidewalks along Veterans Way for a path system for bikes and skateboards as well as to realign Elma Street.

The problem? Many Elma Street residents just got notification of the construction program last week. The result was a public meeting held Thursday at town hall where approximately 15 residents voiced their concerns.

The Town pulled the tender process until further public consultation.

Something has to be done to improve the road. Forrest Gump would avoid Veterans Way during his runs. There is just one small sidewalk on the east side before reaching Elma — pedestrians must yield to one another when passing. As well, efforts should be made to keep cyclists and skateboarders off the road surface of Veterans Way as they can become a hazard to motorists.

The town’s extensive path system is a jewel in Okotoks. A corridor down Veterans Way will provide bikers and pedestrians another option to access the Sheep River path system. The realignment is a different issue. It could mean the loss of trees along Elma Street and disrupt newly-opened businesses during construction.

It appears traffic crossing Veterans Way seems minimal as drivers have Elizabeth/McRae Street as on option or even Milligan Drive at the top of the hill.

The verdict? Thumbs up to enhancing pathways on Veterans Way, but the realignment is questionable. However, further public consultation is a start down the right path.
