Carnival eats, a Stampede favourite

I’m looking for Canadian Bacon pickle balls. They’re one of this year’s new culinary additions on the Stampede grounds – back bacon wrapped around a pickle, wrapped around a hot dog, deep fried and served on a stick.

They’re one of this year’s new culinary additions on the Stampede grounds – back bacon wrapped around a pickle, wrapped around a hot dog, deep fried and served on a stick.

My wife and I (I’m married now) spent Sunday morning looking for them when we made our way up to the Stampede.

Ah, Stampede midway food. It’s everything we wouldn’t normally consider for 355 days of the year, but can’t pass up for one week.

I’m a huge fan of deep fried Oreos, but on Sunday I decided to give the deep fried Jell-O a try.

I opted against the maple donut burger for lunch in favour of a classic chili dog. I also decided against the meter-long sausage, a foot-long hot dog is usually ample.

I’m wont to give the chili lime popcorn shrimp perogies or the clam chowder poutine a try when I go back later this week, and I’m looking forward to trying the rolled ice cream.

I know, I know, it’s all a bit much.

I’m actually far more partial to the classics.

Give me a corn dog or some basic onion rings any day.

I enjoy the agricultural exhibits and the rodeo. I like to browse the market place and take in the odd game of skeeball.

But, when the Stampede comes around, sampling some of the extravagant smorgasbord of carnival food on offer is part of the fun.

It’s a bit of a guilty pleasure. How many places are you going to find a Cookie Dough-ne (Raw cookie dough stuffed in a waffle cone wrapped in a cotton candy halo)?

What I really want to find, though is a Canadian Bacon pickle ball.
