Calgary Police have laid second-degree murder charges against a 21-year-old man accused of killing his father and dumping the body in Okotoks.
Police allege the deceased who has been tentatively identified became involved in an altercation with his son at a home on the 200 block of 90 Avenue SE in the city. According to a Calgary Police press release, the victim was allegedly killed and his body dumped on a construction site on the D’Arcy lands in Okotoks.
Zaineddin Al Aalak, 21, has been charged with second-degree murder in relation to the case. He was arrested on Tuesday and was scheduled to appear in Calgary Provincial Court on July 20.
The name of the 53-year-old victim will be released once he is officially identified by the office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Investigators are attempting to track the victim’s movements in the hours leading up to his death. They are asking anyone who may have seen his 2012 white, four-door Ford Focus with Alberta licence plate L83 265 in the overnight hours between Sunday, July 16 and Monday, July 17. Anyone with information is asked to contact Calgary Police at 403-266-1234.
The investigation at the D’Arcy lands on the north side of Okotoks continued Wednesday morning. Entrances into the property were again manned by police vehicles as officers worked on the 280-acre site.
RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Jack Poitras said officers are doing an intensive search for evidence because when the site is turned back over to the developers, construction will resume.
Police are asking people to give them time and stay away from the site while they search the area.
Mayor Bill Robertson said he has full faith the RCMP are doing a thorough investigation.
“We have very capable RCMP here,” Robertson said. “We’ll leave it in their hands.”
The discovery is disconcerting, Robertson said.
“We like to think we have a safe town,” he said.
People have been asking him about the situation, Robertson said, but said he knows nothing at this point.
“I’m not sure how they met their demise,” he said. “I don’t know if they are male or female.”
