Team South is looking to continue its winning history as the Alberta Cup shifts north.
Representing the Okotoks Bantam AAA Oilers are captain Kai Uchacz, centre Connor Poffenroth and blueliner Dru Krebs as well as defenceman Matthew Quebec from Langdon.
“I’m extremely honoured to be on the team,” Krebs said. “It’s extremely cool because I get to play against all the other best players in Alberta. My brothers played there and it’s a really cool experience.”
The rosters were selected following zone camps held during the third weekend in March. The tournament features the top 2003 born players in the province, spread out through eight zones.
Krebs is continuing a family tradition at the Alberta Cup.
He’s the third of three brothers to play in the tournament, following in the footsteps of Team South alumni in Dakota Krebs (2014) and Peyton Krebs (2016) – both of whom are now plying their trade in the WHL with the Calgary Hitmen and Kootenay Ice, respectively.
“I get to feel what they felt in those different scenarios and experience what they experienced,” Krebs said. “It’s another moment to share with my brothers. I watched both of them.”
Uchacz finished tied for sixth in the province with 25 goals and a team leading 42 points. Poffenroth proved to be a sniper in his own right with 23 goals and 10 assists on the campaign. Quebec chipped in with two goals and nine points from the blueline.
The Foothills trio were all members of Okotoks’ provincial championship team in Bantam AA in 2017.
The 2017 Team South went the distance and won the showcase with a litany of local talent on the ice, including the likes of Lucas Watkins, Nathan Fox, Hayden Schmidt and netminder Gage Alexander.
Team South opens its competition on April 26 versus Calgary South. The top two teams from each pool advance to the A/B semifinal round with the final to be held on April 29 at the Grant Fuhr Arena.
The Alberta Cup is both an elite competition featuring the top 2003 born skaters as well as a scouting showcase for the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft and the Team Alberta program.
The top 80 players from the tournament will be invited to attend Team Alberta’s summer camp with an eye on representing the province at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.
