Bail money for local leaders

A town councillor, local residents and even a Calgary Stampeder will be working the phones trying to line-up some bail money on Saturday.

A town councillor, local residents and even a Calgary Stampeder will be working the phones trying to line-up some bail money on Saturday.

As many as 10 local residents will find themselves behind bars for a jail and bail event in support of the Okotoks Food Bank.

The fundraiser will be held on April 30 at the Foothills Centennial Centre during an Okotoks Market Square event.

Sheila Hughes, Okotoks Food Bank executive director, said it’s a fun event for everyone involved and a good fundraiser for the charity organization.

“If anybody would like to help us help the jailees get out and get free, that would be great,” she said. “Everybody should have their phones with them, check their emails if they know any of the people being jailed just in case they get asked for some bail money.”

It’s the second year the Okotoks Market Square is hosting a Jail and Bail to support the food bank. She said last year’s event raised $18,000.

She is hoping to have as many as 10 “jailees” who’ll need to raise some bail money.

So far, the list includes Town Coun. Matt Rockley, Calgary Stampeder Charlie Power, Power’s former Holy Trinity Academy coach Matt Hassett, an Okotoks firefighter and representatives from local businesses and community organizations.

And, they’ll have to raise upwards of $1,000 in donations to ‘bail’ themselves out.

“We’re asking them to raise $1,000 if they can, that’s the goal,” she said.

She said they may also have people on hand to help the jailed volunteers reach their target.

The fundraiser will run from 10 a.m. until about 1 p.m. The event is being held in conjunction with an Okotoks Market Square Spring Fling event from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on April 29 and 4 p.m. on April 30. Admission to the market square is $2.
