Dear Editor,

This is to introduce a new local wind to the climatic community of Alberta. Unlike the Mistral, the Sirocco, the Khamsin, the Alberta Clipper, etc., this one falls into the category of the “Winds of Change”, made famous by a former British Prime Minister Sir Harold Macmillan.

This wind is caused by the sudden arrival and departure of private jets at and from a small airfield in the province known, by its aviation designation, as YYC. This phenomenon is characterized by the simultaneous presence of a vacuum and is often accompanied by gales of laughter and/or bemused looks amongst the local population. Coincidentally, it occurs upon the arrival of dignitaries/celebrities like Robert Redford, Desmond Tutu, Justin Trudeau and, most recently, Leonardo DiCaprio after whom the wind is named – for his titanic unfamiliarity with its not insignificant local peer, the Chinook or “Snow Eater”.

Fortunately the phenomenon is rare and fleeting. However, whilst the Chinook is generally accepted, even welcomed for its ability to bring relief in sometimes harsh winter conditions, the DiCaprio has been found to be irritating and of little or no apparent value to local prairie folk.

T ’is an ill wind … From a local amateur climatologist,
