Congratulations Wayne Gaudet on your recent Canadian record at the World Championships.
By writing this letter I have managed to get your achievement noted earlier in the paper than it being tucked away with the Real Estate on the last page like an afterthought.
Certain sports seem to take priority even though the report is often on one of the many regular season games, often with imported players and not locals.
I recognize that we all think that “our sport” should take priority, but when a person runs five marathons in succession finishing first at the World Championships for men over 60 surely it warrants greater recognition. Wayne did not only set a new Canadian record, but was about 13 per cent better than the old mark – a significant improvement!
It should be noted that Wayne has been encouraging young runners in the community over the winter months by turning out to run with them. I know he will continue to assist when he is available. We are fortunate to have the athlete in our community.
