A classic time for Okotoks rivals to meet

It really is shaping into a classic this Friday.

The Foothills Falcons and the Holy Trinity Academy Knights will meet for the first-time all season Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the Falcons Senior Boys Basketball Classic.

The two squads would have met at least once already in previous years, but the Falcons opted out of the Foothills Athletic Council.

It’s tough to argue with the decision.

The Knights would be their only tough competition and meanwhile HTA is waltzing to a council title with a 9-0 record and have outscored its opposition 828-389.

You try writing something interesting about a 99-41 victory.

There will be plenty of interest in this game.

Give Falcons coach Amron Gwilliam credit.

Most basketball tournaments have the host team opening against Smallville High (without Clark Kent) to ensure a victory.

But Gwilliam is giving the fans what they want — a chance to see the two teams meet before they square of at zones.

Of course, being a part-time weasel, I try to get a Falcons or Knight to say something bad about their cross-town rival.

The response is virtually always the same.

“Sure it’s for bragging rights, but I have a lot of friends over there. It’s going to be fun.”

The thing is they mean it.

Not even the finest actor in the HTA drama department or the Alberta High School of Fine Arts could pull the wool over my attention-deficit-disorder eyes.

Both coaches, Foothills skipper Amron Gwilliam and HTA’s Sam Aiello, are in charge of young men who handle themselves with class on and off the court.

Now, I have to work on my own acting skills.

While they work on a man-to-man, I need to have a heart-to-heart.

I have to convince My Reason For Living the Knights-Falcons Classic this Friday is a suitable Valentine’s Day replacement date.
