27th Annual Soap Box Derby

It’s crazy to think that it was 26 years ago the first time that I raced in the Okotoks Rotary Club Soap Box Derby. My Dad and I have little-to-no carpentry or mechanical skills so it was a miracle that the soapbox car we built made it down the hill.

It’s crazy to think that it was 26 years ago the first time that I raced in the Okotoks Rotary Club Soap Box Derby. My Dad and I have little-to-no carpentry or mechanical skills so it was a miracle that the soapbox car we built made it down the hill.

We didn’t even have the proper tools. I believe that all we had to build it with was a handsaw and a screwdriver. My steering wheel was the shape of a stop sign because we could only do straight cuts. I certainly didn’t win any races but at twelve years old it was an amazing experience to race down the hill in a car I helped build and I still remember it fondly to this day.

This year is the second year that my daughter Ava will be racing and the first year that my son Cale will be racing. It’s lucky for them that they have a handy uncle to help us who has more tools than just a handsaw and screwdriver. The soapbox derby is on June 4. Sponsor and driver registration forms are available at Fountain Tire and Carcraft Carstar Collision.

There’s a whopping 102 garage sales entered in the Parade of Garage Sales this Saturday! Is it even possible to visit that many garage sales in one day? I’m willing to bet that there are at least a few people out there that will see them all. There is a map of the garage sale locations on page 35. A mobile map of the garage sales is also available at westernwheel.com.

The first issue of the Okotokian magazine is finally here! A copy of the magazine has been included with your Western Wheel newspaper this week. It features stories on a wide variety of topics from living with attention- deficit/hyperactivity disorder to the business of BBQ. I’ve read it cover to cover a few times as we were putting it together and it’s a good read.

I’m really impressed by everyone here at the Western Wheel for their great work on the Okotokian and I’m proud of the finished product.

I hope that you enjoy it!
