Spirit of the maritimes inspires trio
Music: Performers from PEI celebrate Christmas with show

There’s plenty of music and laughter when Maritimers get together and a trio of performers from Prince Edward Island are bringing a little of that spirit to Okotoks this week.
In fact, humourist Nils Ling said the show The Truth about Christmas is not much different than what you can expect to find in a kitchen party anywhere on the Island in the winter.
“There you get to a party, you walk in the back door and the room is piled with guitar cases and fiddle cases and you go in and it’s non-stop live music from the time you walk in the door,” he said. “It’s a lovely way to live.”
The show includes fiddler Cynthia Macleod, singer and guitar player Gordon Belsher, while Ling is a storyteller and humourist. They will perform at the Rotary Performing Arts Centre on Dec. 12 at 8 p.m.
Only Macleod can lay claim to being a true Islander. Ling and Belsher are both “from away.” Ling is originally from Manitoba, while Belsher is from Edmonton, but they have lived on the island for two decades now.
Belsher has performed around the world and Ling has toured extensively with one-man shows. Macleod is a well-known performer in PEI as a multiple winner of the PEI music award for entertainer of the year,
Ling called Macleod one of the best fiddlers on the east coast.
“She is an incredibly dynamic performer, from the first time she sits down to play people’s eyes spring open and they can’t believe what they’re seeing and hearing,” he said.
Ling said the Maritimes have a vibrant culture where people enjoy life and music and they put the show together to bring a taste of the Maritime culture they love to Alberta.
The show features traditional maritime favourites, interspersed with humour and story telling. And, it’s a great way to kick start the Christmas season.
“It all blends together, Cynthia will sometimes play violin or fiddle behind parts of my stories, we all sing with Gord and Gord always plays with Cynthia,” said Ling. “It’s a true blend.”
