Itís going to be costly, but town council is doing the right thing to clean up the piles of dirt and debris behind homes along Downey Green.

When the Town started building a new pathway across Wylie Park this summer, it was left with extra dirt it had to do something with. Instead of hauling it away, the Town chose to build hills in the park behind homes along Downey Green.

However, residents were never consulted and didnít know what was coming until they looked out their back windows and saw a mountain of mud. As well, much of the dirt was strewn with concrete and other debris from an old landfill at the site.

Town council is now doing what should have been done in the first place and hauling away the concrete, dirt and debris unearthed so far.

With estimates it could cost as much as $300,000 to do, it could be an expensive bill to clean up a problem that affects just over a dozen homeowners. Itís a bill residents across Okotoks will end up having to pay, but itís the right thing to do.

On Monday night town councillors apologized to residents for not consulting them in the first place. They didnít hold back either, with coun. Matt Rockley calling it a ďcolossal mistake.Ē

The whole situation could have been avoided, and hundreds of thousands of dollars saved, if administration had taken a little more time to look at what was planned and consult residents.
