Extending school zone hours unnecessary

Dear Editor

This is a wake-up call to residents of Okotoks!

You need to pay closer attention to what your Town Council is proposing.

Bylaw 20-14 could be passed on Aug. 18 that would change the hours of a school zone from 7:30 a.m. to 17:00 to 7:30 to 21:00. The bylaw would also change the hours of a playground zone from 7:30 to 1 hour after sunset to 7:30 to 21:00.

Why do we need to extend school zones beyond 5:00 p.m. when there is no one around? And, what is the matter with playground zones staying at their present times.

In the summer, they can be used until 11:00 p.m. and in the winter, they are usually deserted by 5:00 p.m.

Part of the logic for making the change is to align Okotoks’ traffic laws with those of Calgary.

We are not yet a suburb of Calgary and most of us are able to discern the difference between Okotoks traffic laws and those of Calgary!

I am not opposed to speed zones in school and playground areas. We need to keep our children safe, although I continue to question the need for speed zones along Milligan Drive (Morris Gibson School) and Big Rock Trail (Big Rock School) when there is a 2 metre fence between the school grounds and the roadway.

Council did not wait for Calgary to act regarding smoking in vehicles while children are on board, Okotoks led the way. Why do we have to follow Calgary now?
