The Olde Town Okotoks Show and Shine has a unique plan for one vehicle that will no doubt be the less attractive stand out compared to the souped-up and restored cars and trucks lining the downtown streets during the event.

Organizers of the sixth annual Show and Shine are challenging rally participants and Okotokians alike to fill a five-ton cube van with non-perishable food items for the Okotoks Food Bank. The van will be parked by the Okotoks Municipal Centre, at the corner of Elizabeth Street and Centre Avenue Aug. 17.

“The object is to try and fill it,” said Keith Gray, one of six members of the non-profit Show and Shine committee.

“It’s a fair amount,” Gray chuckled when asked how much food a full cube van can hold. “That’s quite a bit.”

The Okotoks Food Bank may receive a serious amount of donations if the two-day Show and Shine attracts as many participants as Gray is expecting.

Last year’s event attracted around 425 spiffy vehicles, but that number was low, Gray said, because many people believed Okotoks was impacted by the June 2013 flood.

But this year, on Aug. 16 and Aug. 17, Gray said he wouldn’t be surprised if more than 600 cars show up for the event that has adopted a 1960s rock and roll theme.

The event gets underway with a poker run starting at 6 p.m., Aug. 16, at The George Traditional House on Southridge Drive. A drive-in movie will be shown in The George’s parking lot following the poker run.

The next day starts with Show and Shine participants checking in at 8 a.m. The vehicles will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Elizabeth and McRae Streets.

Calgary rockabilly band Alien Rebels will be performing at the Olde Towne Plaza while the local group Blacklight will entertain folks at a beer gardens hosted by Grand Central Bar and Grill.
