New year, same result in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League Sr. C final.

The Blackfalds Silverbacks repeated as champions with a two-game sweep of the Okotoks Erratic capped by an 11-5 triumph at home on Saturday.

“It’s a tough loss,” said Erratic goaltender Graeme Copland. “We lost one and won one in the regular season and I thought we would have come out better than what we did in getting swept.”

Prognosticators might have expected a longer series as both clubs appeared evenly matched, splitting the season series at one game a piece with each teams boasting 11 wins to top their respective divisions in the regular season.

“We had the intensity in the first period and then kind of lost it in the second,” Copland said. “I think what makes them harder to play against is that they’ve played together longer than we have and they’re such a tight-knit group there.

“It’s so small (here) that we gain players from other places where they’ve probably played with each other since they were kids.”

Okotoks, which advanced to the league championship by virtue of a 2-1 series victory over the Calgary Irish in the South Division final, found itself down early in the series opener on Friday at Pason Centennial Arena.

The Silverbacks climbed to a 5-1 advantage in a chippy opening frame and held off a strong surge from the Erratic to hold on for a narrow 9-7 victory.

“We came back a little too late,” Copland said. “We showed what we wanted to, but a little too late.”

A disappointing ending to an otherwise stellar campaign from the Erratic. And with a veteran core returning to the floor next season, the now two-time defending South titleholders see no reason not to repeat the feat.

“To have the record that we did and to compete the way we have compared to last season I think we’ve come a long way from where we started,” Copland said.

“We still have a lot to prove and come next year we’re going to have most of the players coming back.

“We’re going to be a threat to be reckoned with again, more than this season.”
