Dear Editor,

Re. The intersection of Highway 7 and Southridge Drive.

Further to your article in the July 23rd edition of the Western Wheel on the numerous motorcycle accidents in recent weeks, and specifically to the accident on July 18 at the intersection of Highway 7 and Southridge Drive, I would like to add that this intersection has over three years claimed the lives of several people, injured as many more and the attempts at improving the safety of this busy intersection has only been in half measures.

The installing of lights has improved the flow of the traffic and yet at the same time has created more opportunity for accidents. The inherent blind spot of westbound traffic attempting to turn left onto Highway 783 can easily be remedied by adding a left turn lane. Currently all westbound traffic is confined to a single lane that must look around the eastbound land onto Southridge Drive. It is not surprising then that eastbound through traffic is blinded by the adjacent left turn lane and exposed to risk to the left turning traffic of the westbound lanes.

There is ample room for a left turn lane to be made for the westbound traffic on the existing road by changing the yellow demarcations presently in place to an additional lane without huge expense. Further safety measures could also include a left turn indicator on the lights matched to that of the eastbound turn lane.

What seems so obvious to those of us who use this intersection daily seems to have been missed by those charged with making our roads safer for all of us.

J. Williamson,

Okotoks
