A serious collision between a minivan and a Corvette sent four people to hospital and forced the closure of part of Highway 2 on Thursday morning

The minivan was hit as it was attempting to cross the highway’s southbound lanes at the 370 Avenue intersection sometime before 10:30 a.m.

Okotoks RCMP Sgt. Donna Rorison said there were two occupants in each vehicle and they were transported to hospital in Calgary by ground ambulance.

She doesn’t know their condition.

“Serious injuries is all we have so far we haven’t had an update on them, it’s serious injuries,” said Rorison.

RCMP had called in STARS Air Ambulance; however, she said it was already en-route to another location on another call.

RCMP traffic analysts were called to investigate the collision.

She said there is no evidence that speed or alcohol were factors in the collision.

The southbound lanes were closed at the site and traffic was re-routed onto 338 Avenue through Okotoks. As a result, heavy traffic backs resulted on 32 Street in Okotoks and 338 and 370 Avenues in the MD of Foothills.

There are a number of ground-level intersections along Highway 2 east of Okotoks which have been the site of collisions in the past, including the one at 370 Avenue.

Rorison said people need to be cautious when crossing highways at ground level intersections and make sure it’s safe before proceeding across the highway.

“You just have to be and make sure you have time to clear before you cross,” she said.
