The Town of Okotoks doesnít need to trash its garbage collection system, but some adjustments are needed to ensure it is meeting residentsí needs. And, recycling should be at the top of the list.

The Townís waste collection system has continued to evolve since the new garbage carts were introduced in 2012. However, with the Townís move to not collect excess garbage that doesnít fit in the bins, itís apparent there are still problems that need to be addressed.

Town staff wonít collect garbage if the lids on the carts donít close or if bags are left on top. Simply leaving bags behind isnít the right answer. This wonít mean people will suddenly stop generating garbage in their homes.

Surveys conducted by the Town showed the size of garbage bins works for the vast majority of Okotoksí residents. Most people are responsible, but there are some who may find it easier to offload garbage that isnít collected elsewhere Ė be it their neighbours bins or rural ditches.

Ideally, people should be recycling as much of their waste as possible. Some people are willing to pay the $9 fee for curbside recycling services, but some wonít.

Itís time town council look at making recycling mandatory for all homes in town. However, it needs to ensure it isnít making it any more costly than it already is for garbage and recycling in Okotoks.
