The Calgary Stampede is moving into the Okotoks Agricultural Society this week to sort out which horses and riders will compete in the finals of the Team Cattle Penning competition to be held at the start of the annual 10-day shindig in the big city.

Scores of riders and their horses will start the competition at 8:30 a.m. on July 2 and July 3 at the Ag Society facility north of Okotoks.

The top 20 qualifiers in four classes will advance to Round Three to be held in the Saddledome on July 4-6. The top 10 will then advance to the finals, also set for the Saddledome those first few days of the Stampede.

Team penning requires three riders to separate three specific calves from a herd of 30 and then guide those calves to a holding pen at the other end of the arena within 60 seconds. Not only must the rider and horse be working in tandem, but the team of three riders must also be in synch.

Larry Cressman, from DeWinton, won the Open competition last year with his buddies from central Alberta, Vern Hamilton and Wally McComish.

The Stampede’s 2013 team penning championship was held at the Okotoks Agricultural Society because of the massive flooding last year that inundated the Saddledome and the Stampede grounds..
