Cayley fire hall to undergo renovations
Access issue means playground will move

The Cayley fire hall is staying put, but changes to the building are coming.
The fire department currently uses a piece of land on the west side of the building for the trucks to access the hall. Until recently, an agreement allowing the fire department access to the land was in place between the leaseholder and the fire department. The lease on that land has now expired and the agreement is no longer in place.
MD of Foothills Reeve Larry Spilak said that meant the MD had to come up with a new way for the trucks to access the building
“We’re forced into doing that,” Spilak said. “We have no choice.”
Different options were presented to MD of Foothills council on April 30, one of which involved relocating the fire hall altogether. If that plan would have moved forward, the lot directly across the street would have been purchased for $129,000, and the church on the property would have been demolished to make room for the fire hall. Relocating the fire hall itself would have cost an additional estimated $500,000.
Instead, council opted for what Spilak said is the cheapest and most affective option. Instead of moving the fire hall, they’ll be moving the playground that currently sits next door to the fire hall.
“What we’ve decided to do is purchase a piece of land two doors down, and move the children’s playground over to that,” he said.
This will allow the fire department to utilize the land that sits next to the hall on the east side, land that the MD already owns. The purchase of the new lot is estimated to cost approximately $75,000.
Harry Riva Cambrin, MD of Foothills municipal manager, said they’re currently working on the purchase, but nothing has been finalized.
He said if the sale moves forward the relocation of the playground could happen fairly quickly, but the specific plans for the fire hall are still up in the air until the MD figures out the details of the land.
“When the fire hall will be renovated is yet to be seen, and how it will be renovated we don’t know,” he said. “It’s a matter of fitting it into the budget.”
