An Okotoks man has been charged with child pornography offences after an investigation which swept through southern Alberta.

The Southern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit announced charges against 10 individuals on April 10 stemming from Operation ICE Storm, a four-month child pornography investigation.

The operation targeted individuals who were sharing child pornography photos and videos on peer-to-peer file sharing networks.

“It’s not so much that they were all sharing amongst themselves, there’s no real indication that any of those people that were arrested were specifically sharing with the other people,” said Staff Sgt. John Guigon, officer in charge of the southern Alberta ICE unit. “They were literally sharing with people all over the world.”

He said uploading child pornography to a peer-to-peer network is enough to be considered distributing the material.

“As soon as you have something on there, you not only possess it you have made it accessible to everyone else who’s on your network,” he said.

Kyle Mackenzie Ward, 27, of Okotoks has been charged with accessing, possessing and making child pornography available through computer networks.

Ward was arrested on April 3 and was released with a number of conditions. Police seized computer equipment from Ward’s home in Okotoks as part of the investigation.

He is scheduled to appear in Okotoks Provincial Court on April 15.

Similar charges have also been laid against six individuals from Calgary, two from Lethbridge and one from Pincher Creek.
