Canadians need to start paying attention to ocean pollution

Dear Editor,

A recent Globe and Mail article drew to readers’ attention an observation that “something is killing oysters and scallops in dramatic numbers.” Ocean acidification was one cited as suspect. As you might expect, Canada’s west coast producers are genuinely worried. Add to this an acknowledgement appearing in a recent issue of the Economist that “ocean acidification is caused by an absorption or carbon dioxide into seawater.”

With the March 31 release of the report “The Intergovernmental Panel on climate Change”

I expect debate will again surface as to the environmental effects of CO2 within our atmosphere and be extension the extent that industry is a major contributing factor to excessive levels.

I’d be interested in your readers’ views on the respect to the long-term effects association with ocean acidification with CO2 cited as a primary contributing factor. If I may be succinct: “how doe we talk our way out of this one?”
