A High River family whose home was flooded last year was counting their lucky stars after winning a nearly $1 million home last week.
William Rader was one of the top winners of the annual STARS Lottery when his ticket was picked to win a $945,000 home in Red Deer.
“It was a tough year last year for everybody in High River,” he said. “Just to win something like this and to kind of know you’re pretty well mortgage free for the rest of your life, that’s a great feeling and I think anybody would love to have that feeling.”
The home was one of the top prizes in the 2014 STARS Air Ambulance lottery.
Rader hasn’t seen his new home yet and is planning to make the trip to Red Deer with his wife and two-year-old son. The 2,500 square foot home is located on a fully landscaped property in Red Deer. It has three bedrooms, two and a half bath-room and a two-car attached garage.
“It’s a fully furnished dream house,” said Rader.
His current home in High River is a 1,000 square foot, three-bedroom home with two bathrooms. It ended up with five to six feet of sewage water in the basement.
“It was our main living area, family room down there, so TVs, couches, everything,” said Rader. “We lost everything down there.”
Rader, who works in Calgary, hasn’t decided what he plans to do with the new home. Just winning the lottery eases some of his concerns after the flood.
“We’d like to go up and check it out then the wife and I will have to sit down and will have a few decisions to make whether we have to live in the million dollar house or sell it and invest it in a good college fund for our son,” he said.
Rader purchased a pack of 18 tickets for $250 in January. He didn’t think he had much chance of winning, but he said having a ticket keeps people in the game.
“It’s like the old poker saying, as long as you’ve got a chip and a chair you’re still in it,” he said. “As long as you buy a lottery ticket, you have a chance right.”
As much as it’s a dream to win the house, Rader‘s also happy to have supported a good cause.
“The main cause is to go to STARS and to help them out and everything like that, if you win something that’s just a little bonus,” he said.
