Bringing recycling collection to condo complexes, townhomes and apartments in Okotoks is an appropriate next step in the evolution of the Townís waste collection programs, but itís not yet time to make it mandatory.

The Town is reviewing itís waste reduction plan and is considering providing recycling collection services for Okotoksí multi-family developments. The town already offers optional curb-side recycling collection for houses in the community and so far almost half of the eligible households in town have signed on.

It will be a couple months before the review is complete and a plan is forward. Two options are being considered, either allowing condo complexes to opt-in or making it mandatory for condos and all remaining households in Okotoks.

Itís not time to make curbside recycling collection mandatory for everyone yet.

Providing the choice to opt-in allows those condo complexes that want to take part the option to do so. The Town may need to partner with a condo complex to do a pilot project to get all the kinks out.

Some condos may not have space to store recycling bins and will need to retrofit their existing facilities. Townhome developments may be able to provide individual households with the same recycling carts as other homes in town, while this would not work at larger condo complexes like Mesa or Penncross.

The time will come when recycling will need to be mandatory for all, letís get everything right first.
