The Foothills Falcons will be prepared when they host their own tournament after being tested at a tri-provincial tourney in Edmonton on the weekend.

The Falcons Senior boys basketball team lost in the consolation final at the Harry Ainlay tournament Saturday in Edmonton.

Tourney organizers didn’t show a heart of gold by pitting the Falcons against Kelvin High Clippers from Winnipeg in the opener.

“They are the fourth-ranked team in Manitoba,” said Falcons head coach Amron Gwilliam. “We played them tough in the first half, but in the second half, we played possibly our worst half of the season. We just quit playing defence.”

The Falcons lost 85-62.

Foothills was able to rebound by downing Holy Cross from Saskatchewan.

“We talked after the Kelvin game and we made some changes and we came out and probably played our best game of the season,” Gwilliam said.

“Holy Cross is a very good team.”

The Falcons downed Holy Cross 74-63.

“We just did everything better,” Gwilliam said. “We had a much better defensive rotation, we shared the ball better, took good shots.”

The Falcons’ Austin Smutko, who had been battling flu, was hitting shots from Whyte Avenue. He had five three-pointers in the victory.

Falcons point guard Jamie Derochie led the charge.

“Jamie controlled the tempo for most of the game,” Gwilliam said.

Foothills’ Austin Orr and Noah Wilkie was able to shutdown Holy Cross’ tall post player.

The Falcons lost the consolation final to the Raymond Comets 87-81. Foothills sharpshooter Hunter Karl missed most of the game due to writing his American College Tests.

Foothills will host its annual Falcons Classic this weekend.

The number one ranked 3A school, the Chestermere Lakers, will be one of the teams to watch.
