It is going to be difficult to improve on the tremendous success of the inaugural Okotoks Wishmakers Walk, but organizers of this year’s event are eager to give a try.
More than 900 people attended last year’s Okotoks Wishmakers Walk and helped raise an incredible $70,000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation; enough to grant the wish of about seven children.
Cory Rockley, one of the organizers of this year’s event, said everything is coming together and they are looking forward to a successful sophomore walk on Saturday.
“There are a lot of great people wanting to get involved and everything is looking really good,” said Rockley.
Of course, organizers are more prepared for the crowd this time around after being a little caught off guard by the response in 2012.
“We expected a couple of hundred,” said Rockley. “We were speechless when we saw all those people in the park.
“Okotoks always responds to a family in crisis and people wanted to jump into action and help them.”
Last year’s Okotoks Wishwalk ambassador family was Darren and Christine Killam, who have two children, Bennett and Maeve, have the rare disease dyskeratosis congenital.
This year’s ambassador family is Bobbi and Lance Jarman, whose son is suffering from a life-threatening illness. The Jarman family could not be reached for comment on the story.
Rockley said organizers said they have not set a specific fundraising goal this year. With the spring flood Rockley said they want to use the walk as an opportunity to bring the community together.
For the second annual Okotoks Wishmakers Walk registration will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday and the walk will begin at 10:30 a.m.
At the conclusion of the walk there will be various activities, entertainment and a barbecue back at the park.
Anyone who wishes to participate in the walk can register in advance. To register or for more information visit www.okotokswishmakers.ca
