wIt should be smooth sailing for drivers on Okotoks’ north side after a summer full of construction, but they need to brace for more delays this week before it gets better.
Milligan Drive is reduced to one lane in each direction as crews repave part of the road this week. However, the project should be completed by the end of the week and a near four-month long project along Centre Avenue could wrap up as early as Friday.
“If all goes well, everything should be done by the end of the week,” said Okotoks’ municipal engineer Marley Oness.
This week the Town is repaving part of Milligan Drive between Northridge Drive and Downey Road.
Oness said it’s an older section of the road and the work is essentially basic, life-cycle maintenance.
“It’s not like a full road rebuild, they mill it down (removing the asphalt) and then they just resurface it,” he said.
The road will be reduced to single lane in each direction.
The Town is only repaving the two lanes on the north side of the road this year.
Oness said the two lanes on the south side will be done in the future. He said a consultant hired by the Town to assess the road determined the lanes on the south side are in better condition and didn’t need to be repaved.
The Town also recently rebuilt curbs along the section of the road in preparation for the paving work.
Oness said the paving project should be completed and the road reopened by the end of the week if weather co-operates.
Almost four months of work along Centre Avenue could be finished around the same time.
The $2.96 million project involved replacing an existing 40-year-old water line under the road. The installation of new water infrastructure is nearly complete and crews are now rebuilding and paving Centre Avenue. Work began at the beginning of May as crews started at the south end of Centre Avenue near the rail tracks and moved north.
The final section of Centre Avenue is expected to be paved this week.
Oness said crews still need to do final tests of the new road base to look for any soft spots. If everything works out, paving was expected to begin on Tuesday and the work could be completed by the end of the week.
