A long-time Okotoks business has made a significant contribution to efforts to help High River residents rebuild from the devastation of June’s flood.
Last week, Southridge Chrysler donated $30,000 to the High River Renewal Fund.
Owner John Gotch said the flood is a tragic event touching many in the community and he felt obligated to do something to help.
“My heart goes out to the people and the businesses that have suffered these losses and had to go through this ordeal,” he said. “I wish them all the best. I hope that this contribution helps in some way.”
Gotch said the Okotoks dealership has customers and employees who were affected by the flood and he wanted to do something to help them rebuild their lives.
“It was earmarked for assisting in the rebuilding, primarily for helping the people and businesses that have suffered losses to their properties and belongings,” he said.
While Gotch declined to go into details, he said the dealership also provided financial assistance to employees who live in High River and were affected by the flood.
He said it will be a long process to rebuild High River and it will take a lot of support from the community to do so. He said he hopes other businesses and community organizations will continue to step up to help High River rebuild.
“I also hope that this doesn’t have to be the end of it for anyone,” he said. “I hope this will stir some others on too. I’m sure we’re not the first ones to be doing this, I know we’re not, but if all goes well hopefully we won’t be the last.”
Gotch said he may provide additional help in the future to support the rebuilding process in High River.
“We would rule nothing out, it absolutely would be seriously considered as we go forward,” he said. “This does not have to be the end of it.”
Les Rempel, renewal fund committee chairman and former High River mayor, said the fund is dedicated to helping with housing needs.
“Our focus as a committee will be rebuilding of homes that are damaged and for people who didn’t have adequate insurance or DRP funding,” he said.
The committee will oversee donations coming in and it is working to draw up criteria outlining how people would qualify for assistance.
