Farmers markets great for the communityBy: | Posted: Wednesday, Mar 13, 2013 06:00 am Dear Editor, As temperatures increase, and people are gearing up for summer, it is exciting to think about the influx of fresh fruits and vegetables that will soon flood farmers’ markets all over the world. Growing up in Okotoks, we often visited farmers’ markets in Millarville and Calgary. They were a great experience for all members of our family. When one was started in Okotoks, we were all very excited. One of the great things about farmers’ markets in general is that they show an increase in people who are concerned or interested in knowing about where their food comes from. It shows that people care about nutrition, but also, that they care about how the food is made. What’s more, farmers’ markets (especially in smaller towns) can create a sense of community and forge a link between producers and consumers. I recently visited farmers’ markets in both Toronto and Edmonton, and they were full of smiling people. Despite hundreds of shoppers all making their rounds, everyone seemed to know the sellers and vice versa. This connection makes people feel good about what they buy because they can trust one another. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly difficult for small farmers to compete with big farming corporations. One way people can help is by purchasing from farmers’ markets whenever possible. Hopefully the Okotoks Farmers’ Market will continue to grow this summer. It’s a great way to spend an hour or two on a Friday afternoon.
