Clarifying misunderstanding over Parent Link CentreBy: | Posted: Wednesday, Feb 13, 2013 05:43 pm Dear Editor, I think it’s important that your readers have a little more information about the proposed parent centre in Okotoks. In response to a growing demand from Okotoks parents for more services, the Parent Link Centre began looking at options for expanding their programs. Unfortunately, there have been some misunderstandings. The primary goal of Parent Link Centres is to connect parents to resources in their communities and to enhance early childhood development. Our sincere apologies for any misunderstanding about the exploring the probability of locating the program out of Big Rock School. As many people are aware, programming space and office space is at a premium in Okotoks and so, a variety of options were being explored by program staff. We share the concerns for child safety with the community, as this is a priority of Parent Link Centres, and, therefore, would not have chosen to proceed with utilizing the portable space at Big Rock School if it was not a fit for the community. Not everyone may be aware of what Parent Link Centres are – so allow me to provide a brief overview: Parent Link Centres provide parents and their children with supports to ensure children come to school ready to learn and offer parents supports needed to help their children develop. Parents are able to access information about community services, obtain referrals and meet other parents, children, and families. Every centre is uniquely designed to meet the needs of families living in each community. Parent Link Centres are not childcare facilities, but rather gathering places for parents and caregivers, together with their children, to learn and play. An expanded program in Okotoks would provide parent education programs, programs for young children to learn and play, family support services (such as nutrition programs, support groups, clothing exchange), and information and referrals to other parenting support and child development programs in your community. Parent Link Centres are universal programs, which means that all programs are free and all families are welcome (participation is not based on income, etc.) We will continue to pursue suitable space and look forward to providing ongoing supports and services to families of young children and Okotoks and area.
