Intermittent snowstorms on Feb. 9 created treacherous driving conditions on area highways and are blamed for a two-vehicle collision near Priddis.

A 30-year-old pregnant woman driving a Toyota truck, with her two-year-old child in the backseat and an older woman in the passenger seat, lost control of her vehicle at around 3:45 p.m. and collided head-on with an oncoming SUV, which was carrying three people in their 20s. A 24-year-old woman was driving the Lexus SUV and her boyfriend and his brother were passengers.

All six people were taken to a Calgary hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries, said Const. Andrew Cross of the Turner Valley RCMP. Everyone involved in the crash resides in Calgary.

Cross said everyone was shaken up, but were lucky they didn’t suffer far more serious injuries. Road conditions were to blame, Cross added.

“There were several storms that blew through that day,” he said.

The roadway had become slick, he explained.

“It was strictly weather related,” Cross said. “The roads were extremely icy at the time. It is a 400-metre stretch of straight road. She started slipping on the ice and crossed over the centre line.”

The crash occurred a kilometer west of the Priddis fire and EMS hall near 272 Street West on Highway 22X.

Cross said speed wasn’t a factor in the crash and reminded motorists to drive carefully when the roads are in poor condition.

“When the weather is bad drive according to the conditions,” he said.

The speed at that stretch of road is 100 kilometres per hour.
