The Longview Library is grateful to the Government of Alberta’s Community Spirit Program Grant. With it we were able to improve our collection of books and to increase the number of our magazine subscriptions.

We are also grateful to Rick Smith for heading up a successful fundraising drive. We would like to thank him, and all those people who supported his campaign. It is help of this nature that keeps the library afloat and running smoothly and efficiently.

We are also grateful to have an enthusiastic librarian, who has created exceptional programming and events at the library for both the library and the community.

I would like to note our hours of operation. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesdays noon to 7 p.m. Our membership fees are reasonable: $20 for a family, $10 for an adult and $3 for a child.

Some new books at the library this month are “The Dark Heroine” by Abigail Gibbs, “Without Honour” by Rob Trip, and “On Canaan’s Side” by Sebastian Barry.

Programs are: Jan. 23 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., beginning computer skills for the technologically challenged; Jan. 30 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., using Marigold Tracpac system to find books; Feb. from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., setting up and using e-mail; Feb. 27 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., setting up and using Facebook; March 13 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Freading and Freegal —Marigold’s free reading and free music downloads.

“Inside” by Alix Ohlin, runner up for the Giller Prize this year, is a story of four compelling and complex characters from New York, Montreal, Hollywood and Rwanda. With understanding, Ohlin explores the dangers and the necessity of being responsible for and caring for others. She probes the “inside” of friends, lovers and humanity. A good read.
