Competitors will get their motors running
For the first time an engine build competition is being held as part of the annual show and shine and competitors will not only need to rebuild a Chevy V8 305 engine, but they will also need to get it to start.
Event organizer Zane Southgate said competitors will need to pay a lot of attention to the task at hand and get it just right.
"It's a lot of procedure and if your procedure is done right it should have no problem starting," he said.
Southgate owns Chestermere-based Zeebs Performance Restoration and is a sponsor of the show and shine.
Students from SAIT will be competing in teams of two at the event and winners will earn a berth at a contest in next year's World of Wheels show in Calgary.
Southgate said the Chevy 305 is simple to assemble with architecture similar to other models.
Competitors will start with a short-block with the pistons, crankshaft and cam shaft in place and the engine heads are already assembled. They will have to put on the timing chain, put together the cylinder head gasket, install the engine heads and get the engine to start.
"Basically, whatever the whole top side requires to get going," said Southgate.
It's a timed event and competitors will have as much time as they need to complete the task.
"It's a heads up start and times, so the first one to assemble and run, penalty free is the winner," Southgate said.
Most competitors won't need much time though, as Southgate said it's a task that has taken an average of 10 minutes at competitions over the last year.
After being turned on, the engines will be taken apart and the work judged. Penalties will be assessed for procedural mistakes, loose bolts or unsafe practices.
The Show and Shine will be held on Aug. 12 along the Elizabeth/McRae/North Railway Street corridor in the downtown area. The engine build contest will be held on the empty lot across from the post office.
