A 24-year-old DeWinton man was killed early Sunday morning after the ATV he was driving collided with a tree south of Bragg Creek.

According to the Turner Valley RCMP emergency personnel were called to a fatal ATV collision in a wooded area south of Bragg Creek at about 3 a.m. on June 10.

Sgt. Jim Ross of the Turner Valley RCMP said the young man had been socializing with friends at a fire. When the outdoor party ended he drove his quad with the intention of returning to a nearby home. Conditions were wet and muddy when he lost control and struck a tree. He died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.

“It was a private party and the victim was drinking before the accident,” said Ross. “We believe he was heading home, but we don’t know how much time elapsed between the time he left the party and when he was found.”

Ross said it is hard to say if a helmet would have made a difference, but everyone should wear the proper equipment and be careful when riding an ATV.

“No matter what you should be wearing the proper safety equipment,” he said. “The conditions were wet and muddy and you have to take precautions and slow down. This was an unfortunate ending.”

Ross said more information will be available once the medical examiner has completed his or her investigation.

The name of the deceased has not been released.

RCMP Victim Services Unit personnel has been brought in to help the family and friends.
