Wildrose leader gearing up campaign
Politics: Danielle Smith opens up Okotoks campaign office
The Wildrose Party leader is kicking her campaign in the Highwood up a notch as a provincial election looms.
Danielle Smith will be opening her campaign headquarters on Northridge Drive on Feb. 23. Located at #101 144 Crescent Rd. West.
Albertans may not yet know exactly when they will be going to the polls, but it hasn’t mattered to Smith.
“I’ve been on the campaign trail for three years, I have been travelling around the province,” she said.
Under legislation approved in the fall, the election will be called sometime between March 1 and May 31 and Smith expects the vote will be held in April.
As party leader, she will have to split her time between the Highwood riding and the provincial campaign.
Smith doesn’t see this as a challenge to her local campaign. She said it gives her a better view of local issues and how they relate across the province.
“I think it’s an advantage, one of the benefits I’ve had from being able to travel the province is to see how many communities have similar concerns to what we’re facing in the Highwood,” said Smith.
The office opening follows a fundraising dinner on Feb. 11 at the Saskatoon Farm, which was attended by more than 100 people.
Smith spoke about the provincial budget and the party’s proposed alternative budget. She has criticized the provincial budget, saying it is gambling on increasing revenues and the Province is not coming clear on whether or not it plans to raise taxes.
The Wildrose party’s proposed alternative budget includes a surplus. While it would include spending increases, they would not be as high as planned by the Tories and they’d be spread out over a longer period of time.
People at the dinner are feeling good about the party’s chances with the election around the corner.
“I’m pretty optimistic, there’s no doubt in my mind we’ll get elected in Highwood,” said Leonard Biscope, Wildrose Highwood Constituency Association president.
Smith’s office will be open Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. prior to the start of the election campaign.
