“I don’t have all the answers, but I am sure going to be looking into it and trying to come up solutions.”
That is the key message that Irricana council candidate Larry Martin, 49, wants to get out during his election campaign.
Martin and his family have lived in Irricana for about 17 years, and right from the start, firmly entrenched themselves in the community.
Martin has become a well-known face, volunteering for many positions including chair of the Economic Development and Tourism Commitee, past president and current director of the Irricana Recycling Society, chair of the Sports Day Committee, past director of the Agricultural Society and member of the Irricana Artists Co-op.
Previously a daily commuter out of the town, Martin and his wife now run three Irricana-based businesses.
“I have always enjoyed working with people on projects,” said Martin.
“It is purely an enjoyment and satisfaction thing.”
In talking with other residents, Martin has determined three main issues of concern for the future of the town: water, development and taxes.
“Our taxes have gone up in the past several years and it is getting difficult for some people,” said Martin.
“I would love to investigate that.”
Martin said he would also like to attract some development to the town and look into the cost of infrastructure, which he says could keep potential builders away.
“I don’t think there are any easy answers for these issues we are having, but I do think they need to be pursued until we can find the answers,” said Martin.
Martin said he has had a passion for local politics for years, but because of his young family, didn’t feel the time was right.
“Now is the time and I am really excited about it,” said Martin.
If elected, Martin said he would bring an optimistic outlook to council.
“I am positive about the future of our town and excited about the directions we could go, and want to be part of it,” said Martin.
“I just want to be part of the solution. I am just really excited about our community…there are so many good things going on here.”
