Olds College is hosting a seminar on non-resistance training and equine behavior
with Chris Irwin, known as 'Canada's Horse Whisperer' in Millarville.
Three Point Stables will be a stop on his workshop tour across Canada June 18-20.
Olds College has organized several workshops for the Swift Current trainer.
'Chris is in great demand because of his magical ability with horses. His methods
create harmony, it is better for the horses and safer for the people once the concepts
of the training are learned,' said Jennifer Hunder, equine extension co-ordinator
at Olds College.
There are only a handful of 'horse whisperers' in the world; people who earn a horse's
respect and trust by imitating horse behavior. By thinking and acting like a horse,
instead of 'breaking' the horse with force and intimidation, a 'whisperer' establishes
a closer bond with the animal.
This technique is very popular now because of numerous books and articles about the
practice and the popular Robert Redford movie 'The Horse Whisperer.'
Irwin, author of a recent book called 'Horses Don't Lie,' has also produced a series
of instructional videos on his training methods. He regularly lectures at the Western
College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.
He has an extensive background in a wide variety of horse disciplines and has earned
18 National U.S. Championships in riding and driving.
The workshop will be held at the Three Point Stables located one kilometre south
and seven kilometres west of Millarville.
Although the clinic filled up several months ago, spectators are welcome. The fee
is $10 for Friday evening, starting at 7 pm and $25 per day for Saturday and Sunday,
9 am to 5:30 pm and you can pay at the door.
