Big Rock School teacher Aaron Mouser, center, surrounds himself with his Grade 3 class while he awaits the sound of the electric razor. Mouser will be shaving his head in order to raise funds for cancer research on June 18 at the school. phMany people go to their hairdresser and ask for 'a little off the top.' However, for one local teacher, getting a little off the top of his hairstyle will be an understatement.

Grade 3 teacher, Aaron Mouser, of Big Rock School in Okotoks, will soon be taking the plunge with an electric hair razor in aid of cancer research.

'I guess I'm looking forward to it,' Mouser said rather reluctantly. 'The kids are all excited -- that's my motivation (for shaving his head).'

However, for Mouser, the motivation also holds a personal reason.

'It's been a busy year,' explained Mouser. 'I've lost two family members to cancer this year.'

Mouser has garnered much support for the upcoming head-shave event, especially from his Grade 3 class.

'The students have really chipped in,' said Mouser, who explained that the students participated in raising funds through pledges. 'We've already raised over $500 (for the Canadian Cancer Society).'

On June 18, at the Big Rock School gymnasium when the clock strikes 1 pm, the ex-firefighter will be hearing the buzz of the razor against his locks.

Okotoks hairdresser, Cindy Hoversland, who shaved her head in April to raise funds for cancer research, will be doing the honors.

Hoversland's campaign proved very successful when more than $10,000 was raised for cancer research.

Although raising money that would help in eventually finding a cure is one of the main causes for shaving his head, Mouser said that there is another very important message that he hopes to spread through this fund-raising event.

'Hopefully, this will create awareness about (the importance of) cancer research in the school and the community,' said Mouser.
